Women's and men's combined

The course

Fourteen classes, once a week. You draft your own patterns, sew a complete garment in each stage, and finish with the business side of fashion.

  1. Class 1

    The industrial sewing machine

Its parts, oiling and safety, then testing stitch lengths and sewing straight on fabric.

  2. Class 2

    Introduction to pattern making

Pattern blocks for men's and women's wear, how size charts work, and the bust, waist and hip theory.

  3. Class 3

    Drafting your standard blocks

Draft and trace bodice, skirt, sleeve and pants blocks, back and front, for you to keep.

  4. Class 4

    Pattern for a top

A ladies' bodice top with darts, bias binding and zip allowance, or convert the block into a men's round-neck T-shirt. Sleeve variations.

  5. Class 5

    Cut and sew the top

Bias binding, facings, an invisible side or back zip, or neck ribbing for the men's T-shirt. Finish the top.

  6. Class 6

    The formal shirt

Collars, collar stands, buttons, buttonholes, button stands and cuffs. Cut and fuse the key areas.

  7. Class 7

    Skirt theory

Fourteen skirt pattern variations across different silhouettes, then a pattern for the skirt of your choice.

  8. Class 8

    Cut and sew the skirt

Inseam or inset pockets, waistband and fusing, sewn to completion, then fit and alter.

  9. Class 9

    Introduction to dresses

How tops and skirts combine into a dress, seam-line dresses, and a pattern with facings and sleeves of your choice.

  10. Class 10

    Sew the dress

A dress in a new silhouette, sewn to completion, with symmetric fit and alteration.

  11. Class 11

    Introduction to pants

Crotch, thigh, knee and calf theory, a track-pants transformation, then draft pants with waistbands, shields and pockets.

  12. Class 12

    Cut and sew the pants

Pants sewn to completion, then fit and symmetric alterations.

  13. Class 13–14

    The business of fashion

Costing and pricing a garment with mark-up, technical specifications, selling online and an introduction to marketing.
